It's a saddle. It has no ridges like a shell. Who said that they are born with them? Maybe they are born with them. But it's a saddle.... but then again, they are reptilain, and a shell would be natural.... and after all, it is Nintendo.. they have a bunch of mysteries which will probably never be answered...

.....the left one cuz idk which either are, and they are born with them, look at yoshi story the baby yoshi's in the intro have the shells when born....and ya nintendo is weird....so....yea

To settle this epic dispute I say its both. Baby Yoshis havent it in Super Mario World and they have it in Yoshis Story.
In Super Mario World everything has eyes and in Yoshis Story you play in a book where every level is made out of clay, denim, cardboard or newspaper etc.)
